Some interesting facts about lawn mowers

  1. The first lawn mower was invented in Stroud, Gloucestershire. It did not have a motor and had to be pushed along. As it was pushed, or pulled, the rotary blades spun cutting the grass to a perfect height. It was originally designed for Rugby, Cricket and Football pitches but soon caught on for the home.
  2. There are two types of mower now. One is the rotary mower that is pushed along and uses a rotary blade. The second type is the hover mower that uses a reel blade that spins horizontally.

  1. People soon found lawnmowing hard work so  in 1893 James Sumner came up with one powered by steam.
  2. Ride on mowers for large lawns and pitches have become the norm but it seems that the days of the ride on and push along might be numbered. Robotic mowers that sense when grass is long enough to be cut go out and sort the problem overnight.
