Some interesting facts about lawn mowers
One of the best tools that a gardener has at their disposal is the Lawnmower. How much do you know about this useful bit of kit? Here some interesting facts. The first one is very useful, did you know Briggs and Stratton Parts are available from http://www.briggsbits.co.uk/? You do now.
- The first lawn mower was invented in Stroud, Gloucestershire. It did not have a motor and had to be pushed along. As it was pushed, or pulled, the rotary blades spun cutting the grass to a perfect height. It was originally designed for Rugby, Cricket and Football pitches but soon caught on for the home.
- There are two types of mower now. One is the rotary mower that is pushed along and uses a rotary blade. The second type is the hover mower that uses a reel blade that spins horizontally.
- People soon found lawnmowing hard work so in 1893 James Sumner came up with one powered by steam.
- Ride on mowers for large lawns and pitches have become the norm but it seems that the days of the ride on and push along might be numbered. Robotic mowers that sense when grass is long enough to be cut go out and sort the problem overnight.
