Double glazing is not available in many different ‘types’. All installations are the same, but there can be differences in the type of frame and glass used. Double glazed windows are most often made of UPVC.
Aluminium and wood frames can be made, too. Thanks to modern technology, they are as effective as UPVC in terms of both visual appeal and practicality.
There are a number of options when it comes to choosing the type of glass:
Low emissivity is the name of this glass. A thin metal coating called ‘low-e’ is applied to the glass to produce an insulation effect. The resulting heat reduction reduces heat transfer from one side to the other, increasing the energy efficiency of the installation.
Float
The term float glass refers to the method used for the production of most modern windows and glass installations. It involves floating the molten glass over a thin layer of metal. This produces an even, flat surface. It may sound like a fancy method, but it is actually the most common way to make glass.
Laminated glass
Laminated glass is even more secure. Double glazing has always been more secure than single glazed glass. Two sheets of glass are laminated together to create a panel. This prevents the glass from bursting into tiny fragments if they break. When you need Double Glazing Cardiff, contact choicetradeframes.co.uk/upvc-windows-doors/cardiff
Glass that is toughened
As its name suggests, toughened glass has been reinforced using heat tempering to make it more resistant. This means that if it does break, it will shatter into smaller pieces, not razor-sharp shards. Toughened glass is used in all kinds of products, from telephone boxes to car windscreens. It’s a safer option than standard glass.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but we do hope that it shows how double glazing is not a product in its own right, but a manufacturing technique. Double glazing is often misunderstood because, at first, it is marketed as a product, but in fact, there are many different options.
What is the efficiency of double glazing?
How much would you save if you installed double-glazed windows?
A significant amount if the main purpose of an upgrade is to reduce heating costs, but security and acoustic issues are more subjective. They can be difficult to quantify. Some research shows that double-glazing can reduce noise by as little as a few decibels, or up to 35 decibels. This is about the same level of sound heard in a typical conversation.
