Still living with mum and dad? It’s getting harder and harder for young people to save up enough money to spread their wings and find their own place, but it can be done. Many young people are staying with their parents until well into their twenties, but here are some tell-tale signs it’s time to move out:

  1. You love going out

At some point, your folks will complain that you go out too much. If you’re having to ask permission to borrow the car or giving a time you’ll be back by – you know you need your own space. If you’re still asking permission to go out, then you definitely need to think about getting your own place.

2.You’ve outgrown your bedroom

If your childhood toys and knick knacks are just getting in your way and the cute wallpaper and out-dated décor is becoming embarrassing, then it’s time to move on to a fresh start where you can choose your own décor.

  1. Your younger siblings dump their chores on you

If you’ve been away at University, on your return your younger siblings will rub their hands together with glee when they realise you can assume your old chores again that were dumped on them when you left. If this annoys you because you’ve got to go to work or look for work or just want to sleep in all day and party all night – well, something’s got to give! Time for your own pad.

  1. You and your parents don’t agree whether it’s a generation thing or a personality thing, our relationships with our folks are not always plain-sailing. If their lack of understanding gets you agitated, views are clashing, and arguments keep occurring, perhaps some space is what’s needed. You’ll get on much better when you all have your own space. 1. Bringing home your partner is difficult

Not having any privacy can put a strain on a relationship. Living at your parents’ house is awkward when you want some alone time with your significant other. Especially strict parents might even be in favour of no guests after 8pm rule. Yes, it’s just like being a kid all over again. It’s not just when you have a partner that the lack of privacy is annoying. If you have younger siblings barging into your room and parents coming in unannounced, it can soon get a little tiring.

  1. Nothing left to learn

At some point we all realise that we know all we need to know in order to embark on a new chapter in our lives. Of course, we don’t, but the arrogance of youth is a wonderful thing! It’s time to do things your own way, you know the basics and the difference between right and wrong for example. It’s time to carve your own path and it’s really exciting!
